Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Shengligou to the north of the Qitai County Town, Xinjiang. It was named by the Compiling Group on the Regional Stratigraphic Chart of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 1981.


Lithology and Thickness

Conglomerate. Composed of dark-grey and brown-red thick-bedded conglomerates, intercalated with siltstone, sandy siltstone and pure siltstone. Thickness of 15 m at type section; but reaches 1100 m on sides of basin.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformable contact with the underlying Liukeshu Fm (or the underlying Shiqiantan Fm) of the upper Carboniferous.

Upper contact

Conformable contact with the overlying Pingdiquan Fm.

Regional extent

Distributed on the northeastern margin of the Junggarya. It is the thinnest at the Shengligou, and is thickening towards both the eastern and western sides of the basin, and with the greatest thickness being of 1171-1271 m.
